A Detour is a Choice Between Two Tasks......

Those of you familiar with The Amazing Race, will recognize those often dreaded words. Each leg of TAR has a detour.....a choice between two tasks. The trick is knowing which of the two tasks will best suit the strengths of the two team members in such a way that will propel the team further along in the race, and eventually to victory.

In the first leg of The Amazing Lace, Team Bike and Knit was faced with just such a dilemma. A detour......involving the tools of the trade for a knitter of lace. After knitting the border and one-half of the repeats for the first pattern Jenny Raye, the brains of TB&K was ready to throw in the towel and concede defeat. A detour had been reached. In other lace projects a Clover bamboo needle has done the job admirably, but the cable is just so stiff that JR did not want to use a Clover for the very wide (around 70-80") Sampler Shawl. She has been using An Addi Natura bamboo with great success on the Stora Dimun shawl, which is not part of TB&K due to the weight of the yarn, so JR thought that the Natura would be......well, the natural choice for Sampler Shawl. The Mother's Day gift certificate from Mr Fix-it was broken into for the purchase of the sz 4 Natura for TAL. JR cast on the 400+ stitches at SnB and the race was on.

But, as the knitting progressed it became obvious that each and every one of the 400 stitches was going to get stuck in the join of the Natura 40" cable. Not. Fun. More time was spent dragging the yarn across the join than was spent knitting. At this rate TB&K would never finish the race. A decision must be made. Continue knitting with the needle of doom or buy another size 4 with a 40" cable, which would make #3 and the rest of the gift certificate down the drain? Normally the lys will not accept returns on needles, but JR took a chance and called within just a couple of days of purchasing the Natura and explained the equipment breakdown. An exchange was happily arranged. The Natura was replaced with an Addi Turbo sz 4 and TB&K was back in it at full strength.

Currently TB&K is into the third pattern of 5 on the Sampler Shawl (not yet 1/2 way--another 20 rows or so should be halfway), and said shawl is 8or so inches deep when slightly stretched, so right on track. SS and Glorianna have been switching off as JR's partners for the last week~~the goal is for each partner (project) to race on every race day. So far so good.......they're past the first detour and moving on! Below TB&K rest on a swing during the mandatory break at the pitstop.

TB&K 1 Detour 0!

Rectangular Shawl Patterns

I'm trying to compile a list of rectangluar shawl patterns for myself and others to be able to access quickly and easily without having to wade through a bunch of square and triangle shaped shawls in the process. While I like triangular shawls, I am really into the rectangluar ones right now. By design I've only included those for purchase on the 'net--not any which require the purchase of a book. If you know of a link to a rectangle shaped shawl that I have missed, and I'm sure I've missed many, please leave me a comment or fire off an email to jenny.raye at yahoo dot com.

Here's what I have so far, in no particular order:

Mail Call....and a Gift from Colorado

I mentioned in a previous post that Mr Fix-it was out of town on business the end of last week. One of the gals he works with is a fiber fanatic~~she spins~~and told me about a yarn/fiber shop in Boulder, just a hop, skip, and a jump away from where he was staying. I mentioned, joking really, because I never, NEVER expected him to actually go there (although I did hope in my heart of hearts) that it would be cool if he brought me back some sock yarn. Well, guess what? He did!!! How about that!?!?! Not only does he give me a gift certificate to lys for Mother's Day~~he actually goes into a yarn store that is not at all familiar to him and buys sock yarn~~which is totally alien to him!

This faboo purple yarn will become purple socks for The Teen! He even knew enough to get two skeins! Good man!!!!

In the mail on Saturday was some laceweight yarn ordered from handpaintedyarn.com I'm not sure which pattern I will use for this yet. With other Mother's Day loot money I ordered several shawl patterns and a beginner's spinnng kit. I'll post pictures of that when it arrives.

I've been working on both Sampler Shawl and Glorianna for The Amazing Lace a bit this week. I'm trying to do two rows on SS and one repeat (16 rows) on Glorianna each afternoon/evening. This is my progress on SS as of Sunday or Monday. Not much has been done since. I'm trying not to get too far ahead of TAL, but now that I have more lace yarn and patterns coming it doesn't really matter if I finish one before the end of the summer.

I'm thinking of joining the Summer Reading Challenge even though my knitting has severely cut into my reading time. If I have a goal set for myself I may be more likely to make a concerted effort to read more.

Knitters Tea Swap: I'll Admit....

.........that Trish has spoiled me rotten! Just look at the bounty that arrived in the mail today! You don't know how hard it was for me to NOT rip into these great looking packages before taking a photo! So pretty......would be a shame to ruin all the wrapping. Um......wrong!

Just lookie what I got! Let's start with the tea in the top left corner: Republic of Tea's Cinnamon Cardamon herbal--perfect for late night indulgence since it is caffeine free, to the right is one skein of Cherry Tree Hill Wild Cherry sock yarn--even more yummy in person! Add to that the fact that I have never knit with this yarn, but have had it on my lusting after list, and you know I am one happy girl. Those two would have been enough, more than enough.....but just look....there's more! A package of Ferrer Rocher (sp) chocolates--yumm, and three chocolate truffle thingys--the wrappers are downstairs--yes, I said wrappers because I already consumed them. Had to fight dd off. Next to that--five biscottis--I'll break into these tonight while flipping channels between AI and Lost season finales. Also in the package was a bar of green tea soap which smells just amazing, some beautiful stitch markers, which, hello...match the yarn, two magnets she made herself, and three patterns which Trish thought I might enjoy trying with the Cherry Tree Hill or other sock yarn! Plus two cute and thoughtful notes. It is quite obvious that Trish spent time at my blog and matched the gifts to me personally! What a secret pal! I am floored. Grateful beyond words. Trish, you have taught me a great deal about being a SUPER swap pal, and any pals I have in the future will definitely reap the benefits of your tutelage. You are fantastic! Thank you so very much!!!! Your gift could not have come at a better time as it has been a trying week here already, and to top if off today I think I'm breaking out in my annual case of poison ivy. So again, Thank you, dear Trish!

A New Yarn For You!

So several weeks ago I was cruising the boards over at Knitter's Review Forum and came across a post looking for test knitters for a new sock yarn. Hmm....free yarn......knitting socks.....what could be better!?! Especially since I'm part of the Sock Yarn Addicts Club and am to be avoiding sock yarn purchases at all costs for what seems like forever the next month or so. I had used my free day in April to buy sock yarn that wound up being knit into the sock savior Embossed Leaves socks, so my stash was smaller even though I had used a free day.

Back to the story.....I received a response pretty quickly to my query, and responded with links to my blog. There were some prerequisites for making it through the cut as a test knitter, and I thought that there would be no way for me to make it, but I gave it a shot. Imagine my surprise when I received an email on Tuesday of this past week saying I had made the cut. I passed along my mailing info and yesterday in the mail this arrived:

107 grams of luscious, soft 100% Merino (handwash cold only) sock yarn!!!! The color reminds me of Palomino horses.
Here are the details on this yarn:
Company: Hill Country Yarns
Yarn: Sweet Feet Sock Yarns (they sell other yarns, sock and otherwise, too.)
Yardage: Approx 4 oz skein (107 gms on my digital scale)/approx 400 yds~~enough for a pair of socks (and check out the price!!!!) The above photo is one half of the skein wound into a yarn cake.
Gauge: On the label it says 9 st/in on US size 2 (I'm getting 9-9.5 on size 1 Addis which fall between a US 1 and 2)
Color: Sandstone (to me it will always be Palomino)
Colorcard: Check out those colors!!!! (I must order some of the Chocolate Covered Kisses!)

My initial take on the yarn:

Super soft!!!! Maybe even more so than Lorna's Laces Sock yarn. It is not as tightly plied as the LL Sock. A dream to knit with--I've dropped a stitch a couple of times to see if it will run down, but it sits up quite nicely. Have had to frog back a couple of times (unintentionally) and had no trouble with that either.

I've started knitting a fairly plain sock so that we can see how the yarn knits up. I'm using the beaded rib pattern from Sensational Knitted socks on a size 1 Addi. It is producing a fairly dense fabric--(this will make a nice, warm sock) with a thicker fabric than say Lorna's, Trekking, or STR, but the fabric is light in weight--maybe because the yarn seems to have more loft to it. Obviously, the yarn stripes, much like the Gold Hill or Seaside in LL sport did for me. However, they also sell a Sweet Feet Sock Yarn that self-stripes with wide stripes in the same colorways. The striping on these--from the photo at the link anyway--remind me of the Trekking socks I made for The Teen. This is slightly more expensive than the one I have, most likely due to the accuracy/time investment needed to produce a sock yarn that stripes in such a manner.

ETA: I forgot to mention that Hill Country Yarns is producing colorways to go with each Project Spectrum color. So, if you want to knit socks to go along with Project Spectrum, you may want check out the ones they have specially dyed for each month.

I'll keep you posted on the sock as it progresses. I plan on posting about how it washes up, as well, as testing it for wear. No, I won't be wearing a wool sock anytime soon, but will be giving it a good rub to check for pilling, etc.

Calling All August Birthday Celebrators

Abigail, the hostess with the mostest, has started a great swap for those of us who celebrate August birthdays. Sounds like it will be a great time, especially as many of us do not receive yarn or knitterly related items as birthday gifts. My family is excellent at giving money or gift certificates to my lys or bookstore, but are lost when it comes to specific knitting or spinning gifts. If your family and friends are the same way, here is your chance to be gifted by someone who 1) shares your birth month, and 2) knows just what another knitter wants! C'mon and join in the fun!!!

Tea Swap~~A Treat to Whet the Appetite

Lookie! A little treat from my Tea Swap pal. Some cool Christmas stocking point protectors~~these will be immediately put to use keeping my lace shawl from escaping the confines of its needle~~a sampler of three kinds of chai (yum), and a note from my pal, who still remains anonymous. Couldn't even get the city from whence the package came off the postage mark. Foiled! Isn't that dvd case an ingenious way to send the tea packages? What a cool gift and totally unexpected!!! Thanks, pal!!!! (Now if my new IK would arrive all would be right with the world!)

Also in tea swap news~~I sent my pal's gifts off yesterday. I had such a good time shopping and hope that she enjoys her surprise. I have a bunch of teas on my to try list~~it seems to grow every time I go to the market.

Thanks, Suzie for organizing the swap~~my tea horizons have definitely been broadened!

Other knitterly news~~work is progressing on the Sampler Shawl. I'm having a difficult time putting it down. I'm almost through the second repeat of the first pattern....lesseee, umm, almost 23 rows times 401 stitches......gee, that's a lot of stitches. I won't do the math anymore, just makes my head hand hurt to think about it............ Dh is away for a few days, so the kids and I are holding down the fort. Means late nights for me.....lots of knitting.....and reading.

Laura thanks for the encouraging words on my shawl project! An heirloom.....wow! Don't let the yarnovers put you off, they're quite fun.....really!

Team Bike and Knit

It happened quite by accident, this relationship I've developed with lace. Until recently my sole venture into the world of lace was Dainty Bess, a Christmas gift for my sister-in-law. Then while reading on the sockknitter's list I kept hearing about cashmere yarn at a bargain. I knew I didn't want to make socks with the cashmere because of the durability factor, so I just put the link in my favorites and kept knitting socks. Then, Folk Shawls entered my life. So many shawls, beautiful shawls. Every time I thumbed through the book, my perusal always lingered on the Sampler Shawl. What a perfect shawl for Christmas parties and the like! But what yarn? What yarn?!?! Cashmere, of course!!! And last night, a team was born. While at SnB I cast on the 401 stitches and proceeded to knit a few rows of the border.
In this picture, I have just finished the bottom border. Today, while administering achievement tests to some homeschool students, I was able to get three rows into the first pattern--that's over 1200 stitches by the way. The yarn is not the best to knit with as it feels like string, but compare the swatch that's been washed with the string-like WIP. The difference is even more evident in person. A photo cannot capture the softness and bloom of the yarn. This is the go-to-guy on Team Bike and Knit.
However, it is not the only member of the team. On the bench we have Glorianna by JoLene Treace. I'm using KnitPicks Shadow in Jewels for this lace scarf. This is a Christmas gift for a very dear friend. It's a fun knit, but I make sure I have enough time to knit the 16 row repeat without interruption when I pick it up. Glorianna is ready to step in at a moment's notice should Sampler Shawl succumb to injury or the frog pond.

We are a team; we each know our roles and do all we can to support each other in this venture that has come to be known as.....
The Amazing Lace!

Embossed Leaves....the Good and the Bad

I finished my super secret project over the weekend. It was another pair of Embossed Leaves~~this pair will be mailed out today to destination and recipient unrevealed at this point.

Details:

Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock Somerset

Addi Turbo Size 1 Magic Loop

Modifications: Just did a regular cast on. Everything else was as written, I believe.

The socks are snug, but they should be to bring out the embossed leaves pattern. I hope they fit the recipient (and that she likes them)!

Here are the first pair of Embossed leaves I made. For these I used Sundara sock yarn, which I love, btw. The first sock fits perfectly. The second, as I previously posted, not so much. The leg feels the same, but there are definite problems with the length in the second, and to a lesser extent, the width. These were intended for a secret pal exchange, but I could not send along these ill-fitting socks to someone, and I couldn't face ripping one or both out and starting over, so I will keep them for myself. The difference in the size is not a deal breaker for me. I still can't figure out what went wrong. I used the rest of the first skein for the leg of the second sock, and it fits the same as the leg on the first, but once I started the second skein, that's where the trouble in size begins. I wonder if the weight of the second is not slightly different. I love the color and the hand of the yarn, so I will live with the difference. I have plenty of yarn left. I could always rip one out and try again, but I don't see that happening right now.

In other updates: this darling bag arrived in the mail last week after I swapped my 2006 Pattern a Day calendar with Trek for this great sock bag. It's perfect for small projects--since I have no socks OTN right now, it is holding one of my lace projects. If you'd like a cute little bag of your own, head over to see Trek and work out a swap with her. She's gotten some great new fabrics and a new sewing maching for Mother's Day courtesy of Number Guy, so give her a chance to use them! You won't regret it.

ETA: My Knitter's Tea Swap package went out in the mail today! It's now winging its way across the country. And that's all the hints you'll get.

Lastly, a Mother's Day update......A great day was had at Chez Jenny Raye. I slept a little late, but was up in time to post my Mom photo essay and head out for church. After church my mom, dad, and grandmother came over for a cookout. Yummm! Since Dad's heart surgery they don't eat like that very often, so it's nice to splurge every once in a while--burgers, hot dogs, Mom's homemade potato salad, Mum mum's deviled eggs, Strawberry pie, etc.! I received a gift certificate to my local yarn shop, some money, part of which has already been used to purchase lace yarn (love the autumn colors) from handpainted yarn, and a gift certificate to Books a Million. Does my family know me or what? Thanks guys!

Stay tuned for an entry this afternoon about my Amazing Lace entries.......

Mom: A Photo Essay

I am fortunate enough to have known my great-grandmother, although she died before I had children, she did live to the ripe old age of 99--she saw me grow up, graduate from high school and college, and marry. I still miss her. She is on the left in the very top photo--along with my mother as a child, my grandmother (seated), and my great-great grandmother.

The rest of the photos include my grandmother on my father's side--she is the one seated on the chair in the garden, my grandmother, mom, and me, at various stages of life. Also included in several are my three kids. The last is my grandmother (Mum mum), Mom, and I two years ago.

Happy Mother's Day

They Fit!!!

Tonia received her socks......and they fit!!!! What a relief!!!!

Haven't posted much as I'm working on a super-secret project :o)

My cashmere arrived for the Sampler Shawl. Gotta tell you, I was like, "Eh, what's all the fuss about this. Just tiny little string." But I knit up a swatch in stockinette on sz 4 needles. Washed by hand in some lavender shampoo and dried in the dryer. Oh. MY. The stuff is soooooooo soft! The yarn fluffed up--I'd say it looks at least twice as thick as it does on the cone. Today I want to do a quick swatch of one of the lace patterns from the Sampler Shawl just to see how it looks with this yarn on a sz 4 needle. I won't dry this swatch in the dryer, as I won't be treating the finished product that way. Quite a bit of length is lost by using that method. I will wash in hot water with Dawn or the like to get rid of the oils, then a wash in shampoo, and a good rinse and spin. Wet block--stretched to see how the lace holds up. I'll move on from there. I hope to post photos of the swatch(es) tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. I'll also be working on the super secret project--hope to finish by Monday.

ETA: First swatch of lace from Colourmart cashmere. 28 stitches wide on sz 4 bamboo needle. This swatch was washed in Dawn, then shampoo, rinsed, and wet blocked. I really did not have to stretch it much--didn't pin it--just patted it into place. I chose the most open of the patterns to see how the cashmere would handle it on size 4 needles. What to do you think? Too open--drop down a needle size or is it good as is? I know I don't want it anymore open than it is. (Ignore the goofs at the bottom of the pattern, I was reading it wrong and knitting while the Tiny Terror was underfoot--wrong move.)

The Embossed Leaves socks came off the needles over the weekend. They're beautiful, but It. Wasn't. Pretty. For some reason the second sock is quite a bit longer than the first--slightly wider. I have NEVER had this happen before. I am not a tight knitter, so I know the first sock was not knit with a death grip, but neither was the second knit by someone on muscle relaxants or something! I can't imagine what happened to the second sock. Same needles, same knitter, different skein. And yes, I checked--same number of pattern repeats on both socks. They're in the drawer, mocking me. Maybe there is some sort of curse for posting photos of unfinished projects..........

Lace Scavenger Hunt

I posted the other day about joining The Amazing Lace~~ordered my cashmere yarn yesterday for the Sampler Shawl. The very day I joined TAL, I received a message from Knitting Beyond the Hebrides about their Lace Symposium~~how about that for timing!? I had been reading some of the resources and links, but had somehow overlooked the Scavenger Hunt, until this morning when I saw it on Theresa's blog. Not being one to let a challenge go by, I sat down to find the required photos. Here I am, phtii[tah hours later and I'm finally finished, only to see that some of my photos duplicate Theresa's. Honest, I didn't look at her entries until mine were complete, but honey, I am not going to look for different ones for the ones I duplicated. I gotta do something profitable with my day.

From Minnesota to Virginia.....

My Sockapaloooza socks have arrived!!!!!

Aren't they gorgeous!?!?!?! Claudia's Handpaint, no less~~which I have never knit with myself, but I MUST get some! When is the SYAC over anyway?????? Please note the awesome cables that run down into the heel~~how cool is that! (On the other hand, please ignore the oh-so very white legs in the photo--yikes!) These socks were knit and designed by Tipper of Daily Fiber Therapy fame. Tipper, you're the best! I love them! It's started to get warm here in Virginia, so they will soon be placed lovingly in my sock drawer until the fall. Until then, I wear them while I can! Have been ever since Mr Fix-it brought them in from the mailbox. I tore open the envelope and pulled them on my feet~~didn't even bother to sit down first! Tipper was worried about fit~~aren't we all~~but these are wonderful, nice and snug, just the way I like them!

Sockapaloooza Socks Have Left the Building!!!

I just got back from putting my Sockapalooza Wyvern Socks into the mail. They are headed by Priority Mail to someone in the midwest. I added a simple knitting goody to the package along with the requisite postcard. It was such fun knitting for someone else, but I am more than a bit worried about fit. But that seems to be a common thread (or should I say, yarn) among all of us knitters, so I'm in good company!!! Sockpal, hope you enjoy.....and that they fit....my knitting needles are crossed for luck :o)

The Amazing Lace

As I may have mentioned in previous posts, or maybe I haven't, The Amazing Race is my absolute favorite show--followed rather closely by The Unit and Lost. But the top spot is held by TAR. Imagine my joy and surprise when I opened up my bloglines and surfed over to Theresa's place this morning. A new knitalong based on my favorite show!!!!! The Amazing Lace was announced today (of course, I already signed up--link to the webring and button already reside in the sidebar--with virtually no help from blogger. I was forced to link the photos from an off blogger site! Hence my explosion in the previous post.) I had already planned on knitting lace this summer, so this take-off on TAR fits in quite well with my plans. I hope that it will keep me motivated to work on the lace throughout the summer. My current and planned lace projects for the summer are: Stora Dimun shawl and Glorianna scarf--both already on the needles. In the planning stages is the Sampler Shawl from Folk Shawls--this will be for me while the other two projects are gifts. I am currently searching for an appropriate yarn for the Sampler Shawl--the most serious contender at this point is cashmere from colourmart, however, they don't have the color I'd like in the weight yarn I need, so I keep stalking their ebay listings. Please leave suggestions for other yarns if you have them!

I have an update coming for the Embossed Leaves socks coming, but don't have the photos yet. I hope to get them online this afternoon.

AGHHHHHH!!!!!

Blogger is driving me insane!!!!!!!
